Back to School – But Not for Everyone

Today marks the first day of school in Indian River County. Hallways are buzzing, backpacks are slung over shoulders, and classrooms are filling with the energy of a new year. But quietly, heartbreakingly, some seats are empty.
Why? Not because these children don’t want to learn — but because they don’t have the clothing or shoes they need to attend.
Many others will show up wearing clothing that’s too small, stained, torn, or completely inappropriate for school. Imagine trying to concentrate on math or reading when you’re worried about being teased or feeling ashamed of what you’re wearing. No child should face that.
At Kidz Closet Charities, we believe every child deserves the dignity of clean, well-fitting clothing. We envision a community where all children in Indian River County can walk confidently into school, ready to learn and grow — not held back by something as simple, yet essential, as a pair of shoes or a clean shirt.
We partner with more than 30 local nonprofits, organizations, and schools to identify children in need. When a child is referred, we carefully select clothing and shoes that are size-appropriate, seasonally relevant, and meet the child’s specific needs. The items are then delivered directly to the family by the referring agency — no red tape, no delays. Just immediate help.
One recent story reminds us why this work matters so deeply.
Two teenage boys were living in a car beneath the Merritt Barber Bridge with their parents. Their family had fallen through every safety net. But those boys had one goal: stay in school and graduate. What they needed wasn’t complicated — clothes, socks, underwear, and shoes. We provided what we could, and thanks to our partner agencies, the boys also got help accessing laundry facilities. With clean, presentable clothing, they were able to return to school with dignity, focus, and hope. Those simple items of clothing changed the trajectory of their lives.
Now, imagine how many more children are silently struggling.
In Indian River County, nearly 15,000 children live in poverty, unstable housing, or what’s known as ALICE households — families who are working hard but still unable to meet basic needs. That’s nearly 80% of students in our public schools who qualify for free lunch.
These kids are not statistics. They are future teachers, artists, doctors, and community leaders. And they need us — urgently.
You can help.
Your donation to Kidz Closet Charities goes directly toward giving a child what they need to show up for school, ready to learn. Every dollar helps us buy new socks, shoes, underwear, and school clothes that give a child confidence, comfort, and the opportunity to succeed.
